Many users report that after upgrading to macOS Monterey, USB devices including hubs no longer work.

It is still impossible to estimate whether this is a widespread problem, but multiple users have reported that macOS Monterey specifically causes problems with USB 3.0 devices. For some people, their USB hubs no longer work at all, while for others, the HDMI and USB-C ports of their hubs continue to work.

As early as July when macOS Monterey was in beta, users had been reporting this issue on Apple's own developer forum. Now it is publicly available, and it seems that more users are discovering it.

"Since installing Monterey, I cannot connect a trackball or keyboard to the Air through the USB 2.0 or 3.0 port of the hub," developer forum user Eurobubba wrote in July. "The VGA port of the hub still works on Monterey; I haven't been able to test other ports. Also, different hubs (fewer ports...) do work."

Other users reported that Apple support staff told them to try an Apple-certified hub. However, the problem seems to continue.

"My solution (discovered recently)," user Tiggar wrote on the Apple forum, "use a very short USB-C cable (e.g. 30 cm)! For me, everything works now... but it shouldn't be A permanent solution."

The Thunderbolt dock does not appear to be affected by this issue. It is not clear what the specific triggers of the problem are, but they may be related to the chipset used in any single hub or docking station.

User complaints were first discovered by MacRumors.

Do you mean this is not magic?

Ha ha. They said, don’t worry about the lack of ports, just use a hub.

Now using Satechi hub, which is the legacy of MacBook Air, everything is normal from Focal speaker settings to M-Audio keyboard to pluggable HD devices.

I am also using a Satechi hub and there is no problem. I have a PureFix hub and it has been having problems since day one, and Monterey has gotten worse. I blame this on cheap component manufacturers for cutting corners, because I have seen that I have encountered similar problems with cheap USB 2.0 hubs.
