My podcast dream may be in a state of uncertainty, but this will not stop me from helping you realize your dream. AKG is part of the Harman brand group and sells some fairly high-value audio equipment in India. I saw the Lyra microphone on Amazon for the first time at a relatively favorable price, so I just need to see all of it.

Those who like retro designs will find AKG Lyra right on their street. Picture: Tech2/Tushar Burman

AKG Lyra is a desktop, USB interface condenser microphone, very suitable for video conferencing, podcasts, and usually suitable for any place where a microphone is needed. As a condenser microphone, it is very sensitive, and its quality depends on your environment. The USB-C interface ensures that it is universally compatible-even on mobile devices such as iPads-and makes your desktop look clean and tidy. This is an obvious retro design, but it may be to your liking, depending on the look of your desk.

The features and controls of AKG Lyra truly make it a one-stop shop for amateur podcasters. The most important of these is Lyra's multi-mode features. This means you can choose to pick up sound only from the front, front, and back, as a narrow stereo band from the front or a wide stereo band from the front. So whether you are alone, interviewing someone across the table, or making a group call with a group of people behind you, Lyra can meet your needs. There is a standard 3.5 mm stereo jack on the bottom, allowing you to monitor the mix, or just listen to the audio output of the device from one location.

All Lyra features have convenient knobs-one at the front for headphone/audio volume, and two at the back for microphone gain (its sensitivity) and mode selection (front, front/rear, narrow, wide stereo). There is also a conspicuous "mute" button on the front with red backlight, so you can doubly ensure that kitchen sounds are not transmitted during work Zoom calls. The microphone itself is mostly plastic, but it is mounted on a heavy metal bracket with a rubber pad underneath to ensure it remains stable on the table. It rotates around its axis with two knobs, which allow to loosen, adjust the angle and tighten the position of the microphone. The stand will also rotate, so it is easy to find a beautiful ergonomic position for Lyra.

I have been using AKG Lyra for a few months and brought it with me on business trips, so I did not miss any podcast trial recordings. As a USB device, I don't need to carry any other devices with me; any computer, or iPad in my case, can be used with Lyra. However, it consumes a bit of power. You will not be able to use it on a mobile device unless you can provide additional juice in some way through a powered USB hub. This is how I run it on the iPad-through a powered USB-C hub. It is also quite heavy; I measured 919 grams with my scale. Coupled with the heavy bracket, it is embarrassing to travel with it, but I did it for travel.

As a condenser microphone, Lyra's sensitivity is understandable, so if your application is a podcast, you will need a quiet, processed room for recording. For me, even the slow moving ceiling fan can clearly hear the Lyra while recording. Therefore, the microphone gain is set below 25% of the range. The other side of this sensitivity is that you can conveniently place the microphone on the table and simply speak in its general direction for a loud and clear conference call. I also started to appreciate the mute button on the front so that any external sound that would be picked up when I was not talking could be cut off.

Some people may find the position of the mode and gain knobs strange, but it is actually smart positioning. Picture: Tech2/Tushar Burman

From an ergonomic point of view, people may find the pickup pattern at the rear of the unit and the position of the microphone gain knob a bit strange, but I think this is a wise decision. Ideally, once you set the gain, you don't need to mess with it too much. The same is true for the pickup mode, unless you are in a situation where you start out alone and then record with other people. The mute and volume knobs on the front are wise, because they may be used more.

I also tested AKG Lyra on a desktop computer with Nvidia's "broadcast" application, which uses GPU resources to clean up audio and reduce echo, and found this to be an ideal and convenient use case. The microphone is on the table comfortably away from my face, while receiving loud and clear audio, with no background noise or extraneous sounds.

AKG Lyra is a good packaging. The included stand is of high quality, and the device can be easily placed on a table. A variety of pickup modes ensure that it can adapt to any type of recording environment, and the boot effect is very good. The only downside I can think of is the strange shape and weight, which makes it unsuitable for field work. At the time of writing, AKG Lyra is priced at Rs 7,499 on Amazon. If you don't need all the features or don't care about the appearance, you can check another Harman product-the JBL CSUM10 microphone, which we also reviewed here.
