Some Mac users who updated to macOS Monterey this week were unable to get USB hubs and other USB-based peripherals to work properly with their laptops.

According to other user reports on the Internet, the USB hub does not work at all. Some problems are even related to Apple-certified hubs. Reddit user Flyersny81 recounted their experience:

These issues have been discussed on Reddit, Apple's developer forum, and Apple's support community. Users reported that after updating to Monterey, the USB 3.0 ports on their hubs stopped working, but HDMI, USB-C and other hub ports continued to work normally.

My USB-C hub is having problems with this update. The HDMI port connected to my second screen works on the hub, but the USB3 port does not work at all. I tried different C ports on MacMini and different hubs (I have 4). After updating to Monterey, I also reproduced this problem on my M1 MacBook Air. This is the hub I am using. These hubs work well in Big Sur.

In other cases, the USB hub works in addition to the power supply port. For some people, the extra connection provided by the external display no longer works, especially the power transmission is affected. From Apple's developer forum:

Called Apple Support and they said they would try to use an Apple-certified hub. I used the one floating in my bag. Both HDMI and USB3 ports can be used. I tried to daisy-chain an Amazon hub to an Apple hub, but this did not work either. The support staff told me that many people have been complaining about this issue, hoping that it will be fixed in the next patch released.

After updating to Monterey (12.0.1), the PD (Power Transmission) on USB-C also stopped working on my MBP 2018. I use Philips 346P1CRH. Everything works perfectly with Big Sur.

I encountered the same problem when connecting my MBP M1 2020 to an external monitor HP S340c. The power supply (PD) and video connections are not working (but the mouse and keyboard are still supported/working).

The same problem as everyone else, I bought a 34-inch Philips 346P1CRH/00, everything is normal on BigSur... After updating to Monterey, both video and Ethernet can work, but the power is cut off. I am on the M1 Macbook Air. :/ In essence, Monterey has broken support for a large number of USB hubs. Some USB hubs work but some ports on the hub do not work, and some hubs do not work at all.

For me, USB-C and HDMI work on the hub, but my USB 3.0 port can only power the device, and there seems to be no data transmission. This problem is definitely Monterey's fault. My device worked well before the upgrade, and I have been able to reproduce the problem and narrow the scope of the problem by testing the device without Monterey.

Many reports come from owners of M1-driven Macs, but not all. Some users have reported similar issues on Intel Macs. According to user discussions, USB issues were reported in the early beta version of Monterey, which suggests that this may be due to a legacy bug that has not been patched by Apple.
